The Barnegat Branch Trail (BBT) is planned to run 15.6 miles in an abandoned rail corridor, serving as an active transportation “spine” through several municipalities from Barnegat Township to Toms River Township. It is a key component of Ocean County’s plan to promote active transportation in the municipalities of Beachwood Borough, Berkeley Township, South Toms River Borough, Pine Beach Borough and Toms River Township. Much of the right of way for the trail is public property and available for use. A previously developed trail already links Barnegat Township, Ocean Township and Lacey Township to provide a major biking and walking corridor through the County.
The Barnegat Branch Trail will accommodate both transportation and recreational uses, providing a safe and efficient way for local residents to commute to work and school, access parks, libraries, and civic facilities, and generally get outside, be active, and enjoy the County’s natural and historical amenities. The completed trail will connect multiple small, walkable town centers, and encourage biking and walking as practical and attractive modes of transportation. Study Process Overview
This study aims to improve system coordination, intermodal connectivity, access from residential areas to commercial destinations, and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. It will incorporate existing studies and local efforts. The study will produce a report that includes an implementation plan with recommended strategies and actions for improving key corridors that connect points of interest to the Barnegat Branch Trail based on local feedback and expert advice.
